In San Antonio, Texas, an increasing number of teenagers are undergoing surgery to get rid of excess pounds.

Obese teens claim that exercise and diet are not helping them to lose weight.

Doctors say that they are seeing an increase in teenagers asking for gastric bypass surgery.  The procedure has been done for decades, but there is little data concerning the effectiveness and/or safety of the surgery for young people who are under 18 years of age.

The surgery is not a quick fix.  It is a life long lifestyle change.

It’s also not given on demand.

Teen candidates must be at least 16 years of age, have a body mass index of 40 or more, and pass a psychological exam.
